My grandfather spent forty years as a jeweler in Portugal. Every morning he sat at the same wooden bench, loupe pressed to his eye, shaping gold and silver into pieces people would wear on the most important days of their lives.
He never rushed. He never cut corners. He understood that what he was really making wasn't jewelry. It was trust, held in physical form.
He retired before I was old enough to learn from him properly. But I watched. And I understood something he probably couldn't articulate: the craft was never about the metal. It was about the obsession with getting it right for the person who asked.
I'm 23. I run a fleet of 3D printers out of Portugal. The tools are different — FDM instead of files, CAD instead of wax casts, layer by layer instead of hammer and chisel. But when someone sends me a file or describes what they need, I feel the same pull he must have felt at that bench.
The need to deliver something that fits perfectly. That lasts. That means something to the person who asked for it.
